If you’re like most of us working professionals, you have 2 computers, 1 for work and 1 for home. For most of you that means 2 sets of files, 2 sets of pictures, and 2 sets of bookmarks. I have a tool that will help you with the latter (and we’ll address the others later). It’s called del.icio.us and it’s a website that allows you to keep all of your bookmarks in one place, bookmark things for your friends & colleagues, and check out what other people are bookmarking.
I know some of you will be a little reluctant to give it a try, but I promise you, once you get started, you’ll be addicted – and never again frustrated trying to search around for that great website you know you bookmarked at home.
Ready to get started? Go to del.icio.us and create a user account. They’ll walk you through the steps to import all of your bookmarks from your computer. Now, here’s the key part – del.icio.us isn’t like your traditional bookmark program. Del.icio.us uses tags (kind of like the categories on my blog) that allow you to place a bookmark in multiple tags (for example you might tag Expedia as travel, flight, and search).
Final tips before I send you on you tagging ways:
- tags are separated by spaces, so you must use newyork, not new york
- to share all of your tags (or just certain ones) with friends add them to your network
- download the IE and Firefox toolbar buttons for easy tagging
- bundle tags together (e.g. home and work bundles) – sort of like folders for your tags, but you can have one tag in multiple bundles
- bookmark Admins @ Work using the link to the left
