One of my favorite sites for music, both in the office and at home, is Pandora. The creators of Pandora started the Music Genome Project in which they analyze music for it’s qualities and not just the genre category or appearance of the artist. It is the largest undertaking of a comprehensive music analysis. The result is an excellently crafted system that allows you to listen to ad-free music and create custom radio stations for various moods.
You get started by selecting an artist or song and they will find more songs with similar musical qualities. I keep a separate station for work and as I listen, continue to approve or disapprove songs. Pandora keeps working to find the right mix of music for my station. Unlike Internet radio stations, Yahoo! LAUNCHcast, and Rhapsody there are no fees, no audio commercials or pop-ups, and you can skip songs as many times as you like. It’s the next best thing to your iPod while in the office.
