LinkedIn Answers and Yahoo! Answers are two great sites to find and share information on a variety of professional and personal topics.

With LinkedIn Answers you can ask a question and get answers from your connections and people in your network. For example, if you’re looking for a event management company to help you plan your next offsite, ask for a recommendation under Administration > Event Services. It’s a great way to get referrals and an “outside” perspective to a question. I say “outside” because the it’s sent to those within your network of associates, but open for all LinkedIn users to answer. An answer from a friend-of-a-friend is more useful than a random website you found online.

Yahoo! Answers covers a wider array of topics than just professional services. Here you can find pet tips and do-it-yourself instructions in addition to business related information.

Ask a question, answer a question and you just might just find what you are looking for. If you have a question that you’d like to see answered on Admins @ Work, please send it me at erin@adminsatwork.com.

It always seems easier to get a job when you know someone affiliated with the position. LinkedIn‘s job search will help you find that connection to the job you want. It’s a great way to look for jobs within your immediate and extended network, a network you may not have otherwise known existed. With LinkedIn, as you add connections to your network (colleagues, classmates, acquaintances) you also build your second and third degree network of friends-of-friends. When they’re hiring, they post a job on LinkedIn and now you have a (don’t mind the pun) “link” to the position.

To view available jobs in your network and beyond, sign in to your account (or read my post on getting LinkedIn) and click on the Jobs & Hiring tab. Select your search criteria and the results displayed with sort open positions by the number of degrees away from you. You’ll be able to see all positions within your network and on the LinkedIn community. Their search is powered by simply|hired, so you’ll also gain one-click access to jobs posted on the web as well.

We all know that sometimes it’s more about who you know rather than what you know (or at least a combination of the two). If you haven’t joined LinkedIn, the largest professional social networking site, then now is the time to do so. It’s free to join, although they do have a paid version, but the free site is feature-rich enough for most users. Once you sign up you create a profile of your professional experience and then start adding people to your network. Adding co-workers, past co-workers, supervisors, friends, and family to your network will help you expand your opportunities. LinkedIn is a great way to keep in touch and stay connected while in your current position, as well as, network for future opportunities.

Through your network you can:

Find potential clients, service providers, subject experts, and partners who come recommended

Be found for business opportunities

Search for great jobs

Discover inside connections that can help you land jobs and close deals

Post and distribute job listings

Find high-quality passive candidates

Get introduced to other professionals through the people you know
